How To Install A Dance Pole

In that location comes a time in every pole dancer's life in which you ask yourself the question: practice I put up a pole in my house? If your answer is yes, read below for my house poles for dummies guide – and believe me, I was a dummy.

If y'all're reading this, you lot've probably idea: "Right, time to get a firm pole," and so "WTF DO I DO?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?" immediately after. God knows I did. Let'south be real: pole dance classes are expensive. Having a pole at your place ways you can train in your own time and at your ain pace, do silly freestyles when no one'due south watching and work on workout without spending a fortune. But should you lot/tin can you actually do it?

Why I Got A House Pole

I started pole dancing in 2022, in sunny Sydney, and every bit shortly as I moved back to London I began training from 10 to 20 hours a week. Towards the finish of my 2d year as a poler, I realised that I wanted to railroad train by myself a lot more. I needed to improve my period, and even though I took a lot of choreography classes, I felt I needed to incorporate what I learnt in course with my own style and freestyle in my own time.

At the time, I was an Intermediate/Avant-garde pole dancer and felt there were still a lot of moves I didn't experience 100% comfortable doing. Part of the reason was that I used to acquire a move in form, simply didn't revisit information technology all the fourth dimension. And then having a pole, while mixing my ain exercise with targeted classes, seemed like the best pick to me. Plus, at the time my pole membership was a Master's graduation gift, and the money for it was running out. Every bit a broke PhD student, information technology was time to roll up my sleeves and observe a solution.

Looking back, prioritising my ain preparation with my house pole was what made me stiff and prepared enough to exist 'scouted' by my studio owner to go an instructor. And it was, of course, a life-saver during the Covid-nineteen pandemic lockdown, pregnant that I could suddenly access and teach global audiences of students from my own living room.

Should You Go A Firm Pole?

For all the above reasons, I decided I wanted a house pole. I felt confident enough to attempt some moves on my own (except when drunk, I Practise NOT to touch the pole then, no thing how much I wanna prove off).

Before getting a firm pole, and before worrying about the practical stuff, every bit yourself these questions:

  1. Am I comfortable enough to train on my own?
  2. Will I really put my ass into it and do it?
  3. Will I be disciplined enough and conscientious enough?

If you lot've answered yes to all of the above, it's time to motility onto the practical side of house poling.

Can You Get A Pole For Your Firm?

Are yous renting?

If so, y'all might need your landlord's permission, or just to give them the heads up. Non all landlords/manor agents are used to doing inspections and viewings with a pole in the house. It shouldn't exist like that, only if I have to repeat the prejudices pole dancers face in this post my head will explode.

Jokes bated, they might let yous know about issues within the house that might result in impairment if yous put a pole up. Installing a pole tin be risky, and in that location are chances of damage, so you do demand to inform them.

Does your ceiling back up poles?

This is sounds obvious simply your ceiling type might make or break your chances of getting a house pole. Concrete ceilings are the all-time for house pole dancing, but you might exist able to fix a pole even with a popcorn ceiling or with a suspended ceiling.

In my house in London, I have a suspended ceiling and I had to look for ceiling joists to set upwardly my pole. For those of you who, like me, had no idea what joists are or even how to pronounce that give-and-take, joists are structures within the suspended ceiling that support it. They can be made of forest or metal, and they're often fixed in with studs.

You lot can await for joists by using a ladder and tapping the ceiling above your head. If it sounds hollow = no joists. If it sounds full = joist. Y'all can besides use a stud finder for this, which will tell you if there are electricity cables in the way, too. X-Pole have put together a super helpful videos almost poles and ceilings. You can watch it below.

Is Your Ceiling High Plenty?

Most houses now have very low ceilings. Is it worth putting a pole upwardly if you are going to blindside your caput against the ceiling afterwards the kickoff climb?

The lowest the X-Pole poles go is 2235 mm, while the highest they become without an actress extension is 2745mm. Having bought an 10-Pole sport 2022, I had to utilise an extra extension to go the pole to accomplish my 2.80 ceiling. I take amazing friends who gave me their extension for gratis, but otherwise you'd have to purchase it.

In my parents' house in Sardinia, the ceiling is concrete just it's pretty low – meaning my range of moves is express. But I thought it was however worth putting the pole up, so call up to counterbalance up all your options when purchasing your pole.

Instructions

Where In The Hell Do I Put My Pole?

There are a lot of good tips for that online, but only and then you lot go everything in the same place, here's the lowdown.

Mensurate a circle with a diameter of about 3000 – 3500mm (120" – 138") and put your pole in the centre of the circumvolve. X-Pole recommend to place a chair below the location where you have identified your joist or to imagine a fully assembled pole below this spot.

And then fully stretch both your arms and place ane hand on the chair/imaginary pole and walk effectually it in a circle. If while rotating around the chair/imaginary pole you don't hit or touch on annihilation else in the room, it means you lot have the ideal spot that will let you fully extend your arms and legs when using the pole.

And then How Do You lot Actually Fix a Pole?

One time you've plant the joists, use a pencil to mark that spot with a line depending on the management the joists get in. My friend and I did it vertically considering my joists were disposed vertically underneath the ceiling. Remember y'all need a flake of infinite to do spins and tricks without falling on your couch or table.

Set-upwards instructions vary depending on which pole brand you've purchased. Withal, more often than not poles stay upward WITHOUT you having to drill the ceiling or the floor (get it, dad?): they stay upward due to the pole putting pressure level on both ends of the room, the ceiling and floor.

Chances are your pole will come with a number of pole tubes, plus extensions that will have to exist put into the actual pole and then expanded. How do they expand? Poles come up with keys just like those you use at your pole school to assemble a pole or put it from static to spinning.

The pole joints have a special mechanism which expands or contracts to lock or loosen the pole tubes together. In my case, we had to make the pole expand to the maximum (rotating clockwise) for information technology to accomplish my very high ceiling.

You will observe arrows and instructions both on the various pieces that comprise a pole and in the ready-up booklet that comes with the pole. I don't desire to go too specific with this considering unlike pole brands might have different instructions. Instructions are extremely easy to follow – almost like a puzzle.

Which Pole Brands/ Types Are There?

So far, here in the United kingdom I've come up across X-Pole, which also sponsors the majority of national pole competitions, and Lupit Poles. I'm an X-Pole affiliate, then if y'all desire to buy an X-Pole for your home or studio pretty delight use my special link over here and I shall love y'all forever.

10-Poles prices go from £129 to about £800 (for stage poles) and they come in chrome, brass, titanium gold or powder coat (so the colourful ones).

Lupit Poles spin super fast (I've trained with them and so far) and they're portable poles with a smaller dome than the X-Poles. They start at €268 and generally ship for costless inside Europe. Lupit poles are generally stainless steel, which makes them a bit challenging to grip in my case, but most pole dancers dear them.

I haven't come across other brands here in the Uk and in Commonwealth of australia I didn't even know in that location were brands making poles – I was that dumb. So if you've got any other make suggestion for me to add together to this post, they're more than welcome!

Grab A Pole Buddy

This post wouldn't be consummate without thanking my pole buddy Elaine. I was so anxious and terrorised I'd ruin my ceiling, or that I wouldn't have been able to put up a pole, that my skin broke out, my belly felt funny and I had nightmares for weeks. This won't happen to the average person, only I have anxiety and I'm also a bit empty-headed sometimes, and then if you are like me you lot'll sympathize.

This is just to say that poles are quite heavy, and putting them up is fiddly. If you lot're putting one up for the first time, I would recommend getting help by a pole buddy who's put upwards firm poles before. I don't know what I would have done without Elaine – when we put it upwardly nosotros both went: "The house is a domicile!" and the day suddenly seemed brighter.

Hither'due south me showing you information technology works:

A big shout out also goes to my Sardinian pole buddies, aka my parents, who helped me put my pole up in our home back at that place 🙂

All pictures in this post are by @zzeroid, videos are mine.
