Q: I recently had a party, and 1 of my friends turned up the volume of my AV receiver really loud. Suddenly, it close down. Is it destroyed?

A: It's possible that your receiver is toast, merely don't give up hope nevertheless. At that place are two things to check.

Many mod receivers accept "protection circuits," bits of specialized hardware that recognize dangerous levels of book and shut your hardware downwardly, like a digital fuse. Some receivers communicate this on the display. Yamahas, for example, show the word "Protection" on the LCD panel. Others might display an error code you have to look up in the manual.

Equally long as no hardware was really damaged when your buddy pumped up the jams, resetting the protection trip should put your receiver back in working society. The procedure varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most protection circuits can be reset by unplugging the receiver, waiting 30 seconds or and then for the capacitors to belch and plugging it dorsum in. (Make certain to turn the volume down!) As long every bit nothing is shorted out, your receiver should become dorsum to normal.

If your receiver is withal on the fritz, y'all may have blown a real fuse. Some receivers take a screw-in fuse in the back of the unit of measurement that tin be removed and inspected easily, while others may accept one or more fuses inside the case--you lot may accept to unplug the unit of measurement, remove the case and root effectually inside to see. (Normal caveats near mayhap voiding your warranty apply, but if your receiver is more than than a year old, and then the warranty has probably expired anyway.)

If you observe a fuse that looks burned out, information technology probably is. Replace information technology with a new fuse of the same amperage and voltage (available from electronics parts stores such equally RadioShack for about fifty cents a popular) and y'all should exist back in business. If, later on your gear up, the receiver powers on, but then turns itself off later a few minutes, it's possible something is physically damaged inside. At that point you're looking at a professional repair, not a quick fix at home.

Don't use pliers to remove glass fuses--you'll just end up shattering them. Instead, use a Popsicle stick for leverage. For difficult-to-reach fuses, try threading string under the fuse, then pull on both ends of the string to popular it out. (Photograph by David Turner)
